Flag Etiquette - Golf Course Hole Flags
After the events of September 11, 2001, many golf courses have looked for ways to show their patriotism. Some golf courses have choosen to use American flags as hole flags. Golf courses that decide to use American flags as hole flags should be aware of the flag etiquette associated with the American flag.
Basic Flag Etiquette:
1. Always display the flag with the blue union up. The flag should
only be flown upside down as a distress signal.
2. The flag should be cleaned and mended when necessary.
3. The flag should never touch the ground.
4. When a flag is so worn it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of
the country, it should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner.
If a golf course would like to show its patriotism without the
complications of flag etiquette, it might consider using red, white and
blue flagsticks or red, white and blue flags.
