Flags at half staff to honor fallen Korean war vets

In recognition of President Bush's proclamation designating July 27, 2001 as National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day, Governor George E. Pataki today ordered all flags at New York State buildings to be flown at half-staff from sunup to sundown.

"During the Korean War, 1.8 million American heroes fought and more than 36,000 gave their lives for the grand ideal of democracy," Governor Pataki said. "Their steadfast courage in the face of extraordinarily challenges sent the clear message that the United States of America and the Free World would not tolerate communist military aggression.

"Especially during this, the 50th Anniversary of the Korean War, we are proud to join President Bush and the Congress in commemorating the signing of the Military Armistice Agreement with this tribute to Korean War Veterans," the Governor said. "By flying our national colors at half-staff across New York State, we hope to convey our deepest appreciation and respect for the contributions of America's Korean War veterans, including the 482,000 New Yorkers whose selfless service in Korea shall never be forgotten."
