Retirement of American Flags

Sheriff Drew Alexander announced that at dusk on Flag Day, June 14th, 2004, the Summit County Sheriff’s Office Color Guard along with Cadets from the Civil Air Patrol Squadron #278 will be hosting a ceremonial retirement of American flags that are no longer suitable for service.

Sheriff Alexander states According to Federal Law, when a flag is no longer fit for display, it should be destroyed in a dignified manner.

Anyone who wishes to retire an American flag may bring that flag to any Summit County Sheriff’s Office facility or office until June 12th, 2004. Folded flags should be placed in a protective paper or plastic bag with a note attached to the flag eyelet indicating the name of the person or organization wishing to retire the flag. Flags will be inspected and prepared in accordance with the tradition of solemn dignity and military manner.

Sheriff Alexander invites the public to witness this ceremony which will begin at dusk June 14th, 2004 at the Summit County Sheriff’s Office training facility located at 2825 Greensburg Road, Uniontown, Ohio. Persons should arrive at least ½ hour before dusk, because once the ceremony begins, no traffic will be permitted in the parking lot.

Summit County Council by unanimous vote declared June 14th, 2004 as Summit County Flag Day. The resolution declares that any American flag showing wear and fading be removed and given to the care of the Summit County Sheriff’s Office Color Guard for destruction in a proper and respectful manner. Summit County Councilmen Michael Callahan, Tom Teodosio, Michael King, Al Schrader, Louise Heydorn , Daniel Congrove, and Summit County Executive James B. McCarthy sponsored the resolution.
